Origins · who is behind the Cobra

Earned.
Not entered.

Cape Cobra began with a few trail-obsessed friends, a half-joking phone call and years spent behind other events. We set out to build the race we wanted to run: wild, beautiful, honest, and loud. Not the biggest. The one worth earning.

What we believe

The way of the Cobra

We are not the biggest. We are the one worth earning.

  1. 01A race should be earned, not simply entered.
  2. 02The route comes first: wild, beautiful, honest.
  3. 03The experience is why runners return.
  4. 04The community is why it lasts.
  5. 05Fewer things, done remarkably.
  6. 06The smallest details are the whole point.
Our DNA

Other races have a start gun. We have an electric guitar.

Most trail races are hushed and reverent. We are loud. The start is the national anthem on electric guitar. Drums, guitars and a keytar carry runners along the route, and the School of Rock House Band plays every recce and the finish.

This is not a theme. Rock and roll is the energy of the day: owned, protected and turned up.

Built by runners, for runners

Great events are never built by founders alone. Our committee, partners, volunteers and the SANParks Honorary Rangers carry the Cobra with us.

Chief Media & Mischief Officer

Dr Jesse B. Roberts

Co-founder · Race Director

Jesse helped bring the founding team together and shapes the race's routes, venues, partnerships and brand. A chiropractor, entrepreneur and creative director, he is the engine behind the Cape Cobra look and feel.

If it looks good, sounds good or works smoothly, chances are Jesse built it. He still replies to DMs.

Chief Vibe Officer

Dr Sean Gomes

Co-founder · Strategy Lead

Sean co-founded Wellness Warehouse, one of South Africa's leading health and wellness retailers, and Zlaant. Entrepreneur, investor and endurance athlete.

Rock stars on the trails, ice cream at the finish, a kids' fun run: Sean can't help chasing the fun stuff, in between the serious.

OG of Trail Connections

Ashraf Orrie

Co-founder · Race Ambassador

Ashraf doesn't just know the running community. He is the running community: our bridge into every club, crew, café and WhatsApp group that matters.

He leads the recce runs and served four years on the Two Oceans Marathon board. His job is to make sure the Cobra is owned by its community.
